The Vegetable Garden in July
Keep on the top of the Weeds with regular hoeing.
Water and top dress the vegetable beds with a general Fertiliser as necessary.
Consider sowing Green manure crops in areas where previous crops have been harvested.

Week 27 - 1st Jul. to 7th Jul.
Cover Cauliflower curds by breaking the ribs of a few inner leaves and bending these over the curds to shade them.
Thin out and / or transplant Kale.
As the Shallot leaves turn yellow, lift the bulbs, separate them, and leave them out to dry in the sun for a few days.
Week 28 - 8th Jul. to 14th Jul.
Apply a Nitrogen fertiliser to Asparagus bed.
Earth up / Collar Celery.
Cut down Globe Artichoke if harvesting is complete.
Place Shallot bulbs in trays, net bags or string them up, and store in a dry, airy, frost free place.
Week 29 - 15th Jul. to 21st Jul.
Plant out Cauliflower (autumn)
Cut back Chives.
Feed Sweet Corn.
Ensure Turnips do not dry out.
Week 30 - 22nd Jul. to 28th Jul.
Plant out Calabrese (autumn)
Be on the look out for Allium rust and if found, remove and destroy all infected plants.
Remove unripe berries from Asparagus plants.
Remove flowers from Basil plants.
Regularly harvest Runner bean pods to encourage further production and pinch out the tips of the plants if they have reached the top of their supports.
Water Sweet corn regularly during the flowering period and keep beds weed free.
Prepare bed for Spring cabbage.
Cut down Pea plants after harvesting.
