Growing 'Indoors' or 'Under glass' in December

Overview:

Basically this month is about keeping plants ticking over, and ensuring that they are growing in optimum conditions.


Note: As with most advice on gardening the advisors location will often influence the content of the advice.

To alleviate this problem I have produced this chart indicating how you can make adjustments to the timing of events as seen in this website.

Week 49 - 1st Dec to 7th Dec.

Check forced bulbs for signs of growth.


Week 50 - 8th Dec to 14th Dec.

Humidity can be a problems indoors so train plants such as Philodendron up moss covered poles.

Keep a close watch on day / night temperatures and adjust Greenhouse heaters and vents accordingly.

Fetch potted Azaleas in to a warmer environment.

Prune potted Camellias if required.

Apply a tar oil winter wash to the Grape vine rods.

Check dried flower and foliage materials stored in sheds or outbuildings, fetch them into the house to brighten things up over Christmas and beyond.


Week 51 - 15th Dec to 21st Dec.

Ensure that Freesia plants are in good light and a warm environment.

Check bulbs in plunge beds or cool dark places to prevent compost or bulb fibre from drying out.

Keep Alpines well ventilated to minimize grey mould (botrytis) and collar rot infections, check for signs of aphids and slug damage.

Ensure House plant roots are just moist.
