The Gardeners Almanac

The place to find out what to do in the garden this week
My Back Garden

Growing 'Indoors' or 'Under glass' in April

This is a month for getting overwintered plants started off for another growing year.

This is likely to entail re-potting, increasing watering and feeding.

Note: As with most advice on gardening the advisors location will often influence the content of the advice.

To alleviate this problem I have produced this chart indicating how you can make adjustments to the timing of events as seen in this website.

I hope you find this useful! .......Tg

Week 14 - 2nd Apr. to 8th Apr.

Apply a weak liquid feed to Sprekelia every two weeks from flowering time until the leaves die back.

Re-pot Alpine plants as necessary.

Pot up Aloe, Cymbidium / Orchids, Fuchsia, Gladioli.

Re-pot and tidy up Ferns, and divide if necessary.

Week 15 - 9th Apr. to 15th Apr.

Pot up mature Billbergia, Gardenia, Schlumbergera, Vriesea.

Commence feeding Ranunculus.

Gradually withhold water from Cyclamen plants that have finished flowering.

Week 16 - 16th Apr. to 22nd Apr.

Pot on Canna, Echevera, Ficus plants.

Start Cactus and Succulents into growth.

Prune / Trim Aucuba if necessary.

Feed Chlorophytum with a general fertiliser.

When Grapes come into flower, keep the greenhouse fairly dry to encourage good pollination.

Week 17 - 23rd Apr. to 29th Apr.

Re-pot Crassula, Draceana.

Prepare beds to receive Tomatoes.

Continue watering and feeding Hyacinth bulbs that were forced into early bloom, until the foliage shows signs of turning yellow.

If the leaves have already yellowed, lift the bulbs and store them in a cool airy space until autumn.
