Growing 'Indoors' or 'Under glass' in February


This month is about ensuring that temperatures are kept under control, and that the growing areas are kept well ventilated on sunny days.

Note: As with most advice on gardening the advisors location will often influence the content of the advice.

To alleviate this problem I have produced this chart indicating how you can make adjustments to the timing of events as seen in this website.

Week 5 - 29th Jan. to 4th Feb.

If not done previously, clean off any green mould and grime this will allow maximum light into the Greenhouse.

Keep an eye out for greenhouse pests such as Aphids.

Start Fuchsia plants into growth.

Pot up Lily bulbs into containers.

Place Cymbidium / Orchids in well-ventilated sunny position, and do not allow them to dry out.

Week 6 - 5th Feb. to 11th Feb.

Place the dormant Gloxinia tubers in pots/trays of moist compost and start them into growth.

Water over wintered Surfinia plants.

Tie in Grape vine rods if not done previously.

Close the greenhouse down when new growth develops on the Grape vine/s.

Cut back laterals on Peach / Nectarine trees.

Week 7 - 12th Feb. to 18th Feb.

Encourage Auricula plants into growth by watering the plants.

Prune / tidy up Fuchsia plants, and pot up if necessary.

Similarly tidy up House plants.

Fetch potted Narcissus into the home or greenhouse.

Week 8 - 19th Feb. to 25th Feb.

In un-heated greenhouses, ventilate freely on warm days to encourage young growth on Grape vine/s.

Plant out Bougainvillea in pots/greenhouse border.

Start up potted Bougainvillea and Calceolaria plants into growth by increasing the watering.

Fetch bowls/containers of Tulips indoors to induce early flowering.

Replace top 50mm (2") of compost on potted Peach / Nectarine trees.

Prune young growth on Grape vines.
