The Ornamental Garden in January
Overview:
Normally there is not a lot to be done in the Ornamental garden at this time of the year other than to keep it free from wind blown detritus.
Note: As with most advice on gardening the advisors location will often influence the content of the advice.
To alleviate this problem I have produced this chart indicating how you can make adjustments to the timing of events as seen in this website.
I hope you find this useful! .......Tg
Week 1 - 1st Jan. to 7th Jan.
Cover tender plants that can not be moved with a few layers of agricultural fleece to protect them from frosts.
Loosely tie Cortaderia leaves together and spread bracken / straw around the base of the plant/s.
Week 2 - 8th Jan. to 14th Jan.
Clear away old fronds from the crowns of hardy Ferns.
Check recently planted ferns to ensure that they have not been dislodged by rain / frost, and firm in if necessary.
Week 3 - 15th Jan. to 21st Jan.
Lift any self-seeded perennials and re-plant in a preferred location.
Week 4 - 22nd Jan. to 28th Jan.
Carefully loosen soil in beds containing spring bulbs and fork in a general fertilser.
