The place to find out what to do in the garden this week
My Back Garden

Miscellaneous Tasks in November

Overview:

As we approach the end of another growing season, now is a time to prepare for next year, and get some of those tasks that we put off earlier in the season, done!

Note: As with most advice on gardening the advisors location will often influence the content of the advice.

To alleviate this problem I have produced this chart indicating how you can make adjustments to the timing of events as seen in this website.

I hope you find this useful! .......Tg

At any time this month;

Kill off / remove unwanted tree stumps where necessary.

Although a rotting tree stump may be a hazard to humans, it may be the ideal habitat for insect life to hibernate in during the winter ahead, so give this thought consideration before removing the stump/s.

Clear away dead marginal plants from around the Pond.

Mow grass if conditions allow.

Continue with Winter digging if weather conditions allow.

Protect newly planted tree and shrubs.

Collect leaves and place them in a purpose made mesh container to form Leafmould.

Consider erecting a fruit cage or supports where necessary.

Move Worm composter to a sheltered frost free area.

Install Water butts to collect rainwater.

Repair and or replace damaged fences, paint with a preservative if necessary.

Similarly, repair / repoint garden walls where necessary.

Continue with washing up pots, trays and containers in preparation for next year.

If necessary wash off moss and algal slime from footpaths and steps.

Send for seed / plant catalogues.

When looking through your catalogues try and keep wildlife in mind, and select seeds and plants that provide pollen, nectar, fruit and berries.

Similarly, consider erecting wildlife habitats and feeding facilities in your garden! e.g. bird baths, nest boxes, bug boxes, and a pile of logs where wild life can shelter and hibernate.

And while you are at it, why not purchase some bird feeders (including food) so that you can enjoy the presence of birdlife in your garden throughout the winter months.
