Miscellaneous Tasks in August


A month for going on holiday or sitting back in your garden and enjoying all that you survey.

For exercise you can do a bit of watering and weeding , or mow the Lawn.

Note: As with most advice on gardening the advisors location will often influence the content of the advice.

To alleviate this problem I have produced this chart indicating how you can make adjustments to the timing of events as seen in this website.

At any time this month:.

If planning on laying Turf next month, preparations can begin now.

If going on holiday, organise a watering regime. e.g. ask a friend or neighbour to do it, or fit an automatic Watering system.

Try and get the garden neat and tidy before going on holiday.

Top up water levels in Ponds and water features.

Trim Hedges if necessary.

Order spring flowering bulbs.

Clean Watering can roses and sprayers that have become scaled with calcium deposits.

Week 31 - 29th Jul. to 4th Aug.

If not done previously, collect Aquilegia seeds if required.

Week 32 - 5th Jul. to 11th Jul.

As ground becomes available after harvesting, consider sowing a variety of Green manure.

Ensure that Containers and Planters have not dried out.

Week 33 - 12th Jul. to 18th Jul.

Ensure that Containers and Planters have not dried out.

If Cyclamen plants have not started into growth yet,water the dormant plants to start them back into growth.

Week 34- 19th Jul. to 25th Jul.

Ensure Fish have some shade from hot sun.

Trim formal Hedges such as Privet and Lonicera.

Week 35 - 26th. to 1st Sep.

Renovate Lawn if necessary.

Pot up a few Convallaria and Hyacinth for growing as House plants during the winter.

Cut and dry a few spikes of Cortaderia to make a dried flower arrangement.
