The Gardeners Almanac

The place to find out what to do in the garden this week
My Back Garden

The Vegetable Garden in December

Overview:

Normally there is not much to do in the vegetable garden this month, other than to complete any outstanding tasks.

Ensure that frozen vegetables to be used over Christmas, are picked in sufficient time to allow them to thaw out before needed.

Note: As with most advice on gardening the advisors location will often influence the content of the advice.

To alleviate this problem I have produced this chart indicating how you can make adjustments to the timing of events as seen in this website.

I hope you find this useful! .......Tg

At any time this month:

If weather and soil conditions allow, continue preparing beds for the following years crops.

Place nets over or fit bird scarers to keep birds off over-wintering plants.

Check stored crops for signs of disease or rotting and deal with accordingly.

Place cloches over tender crops e.g. herbs.

Week 49 - 1st Dec. to 7th Dec.

Store Chicory roots.

Week 50 - 8th Dec. to 14th Dec.

Divide Rhubarb if not done previously.

At the same time, save a few pieces on the soil surface for forcing.

Week 51 - 15th Dec. to 21st Dec.

Continue with any uncompleted tasks as conditions allow.

Week 52 - 22nd Dec. to 31st Dec.

Vegetables to be used over the holidays should be harvested early, particularly if bad weather is forecast.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
