The Vegetable garden in March

Week 9 - 26th to 4th

Prepare pots / trays for sowing programme if not already done.

Place composts under cover to warm up prior to sowing if not already done.

Set up cloches to warm soil for early sowings outside.

Dig out any emerging perennial weeds.

Sow a fast-growing, green-manure crop over bare areas, such as crimson clover, fenugreek or field beans.

 
 

Week 10 - 5th to 11th

Make a sowing of Radish under cloches or in a coldframe.

 
 

Week 11 - 12th to 18th

If not already done; protect all brassica crops from pigeons by covering them with netting.

Remove discoloured foliage from all brassicas.

 
 

Week 12 - 19th to 25th

Feed autumn sown Japanese onions with nitro-chalk or similar.

Boost growth of Spring Cabbage by hoeing in nitro-chalk or sulphate of ammonia at a rate of 1oz (30g) per sq m to, or alternatively, 3oz (90g) per sq m of growmore.

Prepare trenches for maincrop peas if not already done.

 
 

Week 13 - 26th to 1st

Prepare ground for potatoes if this was not done at the back end of last season.

Sow Vetch to be used as a green manure if conditions allow.

Prick out Globe Artichoke.

Plant out Rhubarb crowns.

Feed autumn sown garlic.
