The Vegetable garden in July

Week 27 - 1st to 7th

Water & Feed vegetables as necessary, including maincrop potatoes if it has been particularly dry of late.

Thin out carrots and other seedlings on the go. e.g. Lettuce & Beetroot

Pinch out Pumpkin growing tips.

Watch out for powdery mildew forming on courgettes.

Earth up Fennel.

Lift Shallots if ready.

 
 

Week 28 - 8th to 14th

Feed Asparagus & Cabbage.

Water Spring (salad) onions in very dry weather and keep rows free of weeds.

Pick Peas as they become ready, saving some for next years seed.

Pick Cauliflower & Potatoes.

Cut back Globe artichoke.

Earth up Celery.

Sow Rape and/or annual lupin to be used as a green manure.

String up / bag Shallots.

 
 

Week 29 - 15th to 21st

Cut back Chives to almost ground level.

Pollinate Gourd & Pumpkins.

Keep Turnips well watered.

Feed Leeks & Sweet Corn.

Sow Japanese Onions.

 
 

Week 30 - 22nd to 28th

Water Sweetcorn regularly during the flowering (silk) period, and keep beds weed free.

Regularly pick runner beans to encourage further production, and pinch out the tips of the plants if they have reached the top of their support.

Continue sowing a successions of quick-growing crops, such as Lettuce and Radish. 

Cut down Peas to ground level if harvest is complete.

Sow Mustard to be used as a green manure. 

Remove berries from Asparagus plants.

Prepare bed for Cabbage.

Gather Coriander seeds if ripe.
