Propagating Tasks in October

Overview:

Continue Collecting seed, sowing perennials and taking cuttings.


Note: As with most advice on gardening the advisors location will often influence the content of the advice.

To alleviate this problem I have produced this chart indicating how you can make adjustments to the timing of events as seen in this website.

Week 40 - 30th Sept. to 5th Oct.

Sow Actinidia, Eleagnes, Pacific Coast Iris, Juniper, Laburnum and Parthenocissus seeds.

Collect Skimmia berries, extract the seed and sow in pots/trays of seed compost.

Collect Gunnera and Juniper seeds.

Divide Aconitum, Alchemilla mollis, Alliums, Aquilegia, Blueberry, Billberry, Campanula, Convallaria, Cranberry, Dicentra, Echinops, Hypericum, Lilies, Polygonatum and Sedum.

Take Celastrus, Clerodendrum, Hedera and Laburnum cuttings.

Thin out Lettuce seedlings.

Transplant Pieris cuttings into a nursery bed.

Plant out Eucomis bulbils.


Week 41 - 6th Oct. to 12th Oct.

Complete any tasks not completed last week.


Week 42 - 13th Oct. to 19th Oct.

Collect Celastrus seeds.

Sow Berberis, Celastrus and Magnolia seeds.

Prick out Lily bulbils.

Layer Cotoneaster and Parthenocissus.

Take Black / Red & White currant, Globe Artichoke and Philadelphus cuttings.

Divide Echinacea, Hemerocallis and Loosestrife if required.


Week 43 - 20th Oct. to 26th Oct.

Prick out Cyclamen seedlings.

Dress / clean Gladioli corms and place in store.


Week 44 - 27th Oct. to 2nd Nov.

Prick out Aethiopica seedlings if large enough to handle.

Take Echinop and Parthenocissus cuttings.

Divide Rudbeckia if required, or wait till new growth emerges in spring.
