Propagating Tasks in August

Overview:

This is a good time to begin harvesting ripe seeds, and there is still time to propagate many shrubs and perennials.


Note: As with most advice on gardening the advisors location will often influence the content of the advice.

To alleviate this problem I have produced this chart indicating how you can make adjustments to the timing of events as seen in this website.

Week 31 - 29th Jul. to 4th Aug.

Prick out Potentilla.

Collect and sow Cyclamen and Meconopsis seeds.


Week 32 - 5th Aug. to 11th Aug.

Sow Antirrhinum, Calceolaria, Cornus, and Ranunculus seeds.

Collect Mahonia berries, extract seeds and sow.

Collect and sow Sweet William seeds.

Take Albizia, Berberis, Caryopteris, Cassiope, Clerodendrum, Deutzia, Elaeagnes, Escallonia, Fig, Garrya, Genista, Jasmine nudiflorum, Lavender, Parthenocissus, Viola and Wisteria cuttings.

Layer Lonicera and Figs if required.

Divide and repot Nerines if required.

Plant up Sprekelia bulbs singly in 75mm (3")pots.

Collect Poppy / Papaver seeds and place in store.


Week 33 - 12th Aug. to 18th Aug.

Sow Aethiopica, Ageratum and Schizanthus seed.

Prick out Hellebores and Pulsatilla.

Propagate Peaches / Nectarines by setting the stones singly in potting compost.

Layer Cornus.


Week 34 - 19th Aug. to 25th Aug.

Place Aubretia seedlings in coldframe to harden off.

Take Cotoneaster cuttings.

Collect and sow Dictamnus, Eremurus and Lily seeds.

Collect and store Nemophila seeds if required.

Sever Strawberry runners from parent plants (if rooted) and place in cold frame until planting out time.


Week 35 - 26th Aug. to 1st Sept.

Sow Anacyclus, Briza, Crocosmia, Euonymus, Laurentia and Lychnis seeds.

Prick out Schizanthus if large enough to handle.

Collect Crocosmia, Fennel, Lychnis, Rose and Salpiglossis seeds if required.

Divide and replant Astrantia, Endymon and Paeony plants if necessary.

Take Aucuba, Gooseberry and Potentilla cuttings.

Layer Cassiope, Hamamelis mollis, Jasmine nudiflorum and Pieris.
