Ornamental garden in September

At any time this month;

Divide hardy perennials e.g. Geraniums.

Note; Most perennials will benefit from dividing every three or four years!

Do this by by lifting and dividing the clumps, discarding the old central portions, and replanting the new/younger, outer pieces into freshly prepared soil.

 
 

Week 36 - 2nd to 8th

Plant out; Allium, Alyssum saxatile, Anacyclus, Anchusa, Anemone bulbs, Bellis, BroomBuxus (Box) Clerodendrum, Cytisus, Eremurus & Euonymus.,

Transplant Azalea if required.

Sever Carnation Dianthus layers (if rooted)

Prune Lonicera.

Prepare beds for Primula / Polyanthus.

 
 

Week 37 - 9th to 15th

Naturalise hardy spring bulbs to give a splash of colour to areas of informal lawn.

Divide Violets.

Plant out Hebe, Hedera, Hyacinth & Iris.

 
 

Week 38 - 16th to 22nd

Prune Rambling roses and Lavender when they have finished flowering.

Plant out Aubretia, Canterbury Bells, Caryopteris, Catananche,  Conifers, Cotoneaster, Mahonia, Primula / Polyanthus.

Divide Eremurus if required.

Pot up Ageratum for spring flowering.

Cut Sildalcea down to encourage lateral growth.

Fill in gaps in the border with container-grown perennial.

Prepare the planting sites thoroughly prior to planting and add a little slow release fertiliser, e.g. Bonemeal, to the infill soil.

Prepare site for Clematis plants.

Collect Lonicera berries/seed.

 
 

Week 39 - 23rd to 29th

Deadhead roses.

Divide Rhodhypoxis if required.

Collect lily bulbils.

Tidy up Carnations.
