Ornamental garden in October

At any time this month;

Generally this month is about tidying up before winter sets in, and planting various perennials and shrubs before the soil cools down; e.g.

Continue dead-heading fading blooms, and supress weeds by hoeing.

Cut down and lift Dahlia plants after they have been blackened by frost.

Cut down Phlox after flowering.

Protect Agapanthus crowns & Eucalyptus with a layer of bracken, straw or cloches.

Protect rockery/alpine plants from winter rains with cloches

Mulch Aubretia.

Prepare site for wallflower (cheiranthus) before planting. 

Lift Crocosmia and place under cover.

Collect Gunnera seed if ripe.

 
 

Week 40 - 30th to 5th

Apply proprietary rose fungicide to deter disease infections such as mildew and black spot forming on established roses.

Divide established Allium, Aquilegia, Centaurea, Convallaria, Dicentra, Echinops, Hesperis, Lamium, Polygonatum, Potentilla & Sedum plants.

Sow lily bulbils.

Plant out; Acer, Achillea, Aconitum, Agrostemma, Alchemilla, Anchusa, Bellis, Berberis, Centaurea, Chionodoxa, Clematis, Clerodendrum, Colutea, Deutzia, Dicentra, Dictamnus, Digitalis, Echinacea, Echinops, EryngiumFatsia, Genista, Hamamelis, Heathers, Hellebores, Hemerocallis, Hesperis, Heuchera, Hibiscus, Hydrangeas, Jasmine, Laburnum, Lamium, Lupins, Lythrum, Narcissii, Pansy, Philadelphus, Physostegia, Pieris, Platycodon, Polygonatum, Poppy, Potentilla, Roses, Saxifraga, Sedum, Sidalcea, Sweet William & Wisteria.

Ease back on the watering of Alstroemeria.

Fetch Camellias indoors for winter protection.

 
 

Week 41 - 6th to 12th

Move large evergreen shrubs and small evergreen trees and conifers.

Remove faded summer bedding plants and dig over the ground in preparation for spring bulbs and bedding plants.

Plant out Althaea.  

Lift Gladioli for overwinter storage.

Discard old rose bushes that have been reluctant to flower, and plan replacement.

Continue planting other spring bulbs as soil conditions allow.

 
 

Week 42 - 13th to 19th

Clear away remains of summer bedding in outdoor containers and prepare to replant them with a selection of spring bulbs and bedders such as winter pansy and polyanthus.

Plant out Actinidia,  Escallonia,  Phlox, Cheiranthus, (Wallflower) Tulips.

Divide Echinacea, Hemerocallis & Lythrum.

Cut down Digitalis, Dictamnus & Penstemon.

Trim back Physalis root system.

Lift Cannas and place under cover.

Prepare Dahlia tubers and box up for winter storage.

Move containerised Zantedeschia into a frost free area for the winter months.

Prepare Gladioli beds for next year.

Prune/trim heathers.

 
 

Week 43 - 20th to 26th

Cut down Delphiniums & Osteospermum.

Lift Gazania & Pelargoniums and repot for winter storage.

Check new Rose plants for windrock.

Clean and prepare Gladioli corms for winter storage.

 
 

Week 44 - 27th to 2nd

Plant out; Abies & Celastrus.

Take Echinop root cuttings.

Cut back Escallonia & Roses.

Cut down Echinacea, Lupins, Lychnis & Rudbeckia.

Lift and store Dahlia tubers (if not already done)

Lift and store disbud, Spray & Charm Chrysanthemums.

Prepare / protect outdoor containers containing less than hardy plants.

Place containerised Alstroemeria, Bacopa & Bellis  into a frost free area for the winter.
