Ornamental garden in February

Week 5 - 29th to 4th

Check potted lilies making early growth, and control any outbreaks of pests or diseases as necessary.

Top dress the Easter lily (Lilium longiflorum) by carefully removing the top 25mm (1”) of old compost and replacing it with new.

Pot up new Lily bulb

Week 6 - 5th to 11th

Cut back Clematis.

Tidy up large-flowered summer hybrid Clematis by removing all dead growth, and shorten remaining growths back to the first pair of plump buds.

This is a suitable time for layering most types of Clematis.

Check beds containing ericaceous plants, remove any weeds, mulch where necessary with peat, lime-free compost or bark chips.

Dead head winter pansies where applicable.

Check for any plants that display chlorotic markings (cream marks on foliage), apply chelated iron at recommended dose if necessary.

Week 7 - 12th to 18th

Protect flowering plants from heavy rain and snow with temporary overhead cover such as cloches.

Crocus and Primula blooms attract birds, so to prevent them stripping flowers, criss-cross the plants with cotton thread, or proprietary humming lines.

Week 8 - 19th to 25th

If not already done, and weather conditions allow; plant out bare-rooted roses and other shrubs.

Trim down the old foliage of ornamental grasses, snip it close to its base to make way for new growth.

Check shrubs for signs of reversion, and remove shoots on variegated plants that have reverted to green.
