As we are approaching the end of the garden year now is a good time to prepare for next year by carrying out the following tasks.
Looking after wild life by understanding what wildlife requires, and try to create different habitats in your garden. e.g.
Placing a bird bath in an open site, and topping it up regularly with fresh water,
Putting up nest boxes for birds in trees and other suitable sites.
Leaving log piles and 'messy' areas, where wildlife can shelter and hibernate.
Putting up bug boxes as shelter for bees and other insects.
When looking through the catalogues that will now be dropping through your letter box, keep wildlife in mind when ordering your seeds/plants - aim for a rich diversity of plants that provide pollen, nectar, fruits and berries.
Kill off unwanted tree stumps where necessary
Remember a rotting tree( providing it is not unsafe to garden users) makes a good habitat for some forms of insect so think twice before removing it!

Get on with any urgent repair and replacement jobs on walls and fences.
Check that fence panels are in good order,paint with a preservative if necessary.
Erect soft fruit supports.
Clear dead marginal plants from around ponds.
Collect leaves and place them in compost heap, and compost as much kitchen and garden waste as you can.
Move worm composting bins to sheltered frost-free sites.
Install water butts to collect rainwater.
Kill off moss and algal slime on paths and garden steps.
Dig over vacant soil, forking in compost when weather conditions allow.
Cut grass as necessary.
Protect newly planted conifers.
During inclement weather wash capillary matting, containers/ pots and trays.
