Miscellaneous tasks in January

Happy New Year
 

Basically this month is all about preparation for the incoming season.

Listed below are a number of tasks that you can get on with at any time this month.

 

Set cloches over seedbeds to warm the soil.

Do not walk on lawns when they are frozen.

Plan your garden layout for the incoming season.

Check over garden tools and service them as necessary.

Wash / Clean pots and trays in preparation for propagation.

Check after heavy falls of snow, that the branches of evergreens, such as conifers,are not weighed down to breaking point.

Collect up windblown debris and clear it away.

Apply a winter wash to kill off dangerous slippery algal slime and moss on paving.

Remove deep-rooted weeds growing through gravel paths or paving and apply a total weedkiller to deter further weed growth.

Don't discard that potted chrysanthemum plant you got for Christmas because it has finished flowering, save it to plant out in summer or take cuttings from.

 
 

Week 1 - 1st to 7th

Take protective measures for cold weather.

Covering coldframes if necessary.

Turning off the outdoor water supply.

Send for seed catalogues if you have not already done so.

Order seeds and plants if you have not already done so.

As soon as your seeds arrive, store them in the order they will be required.

 
 

Week 2 - 8th to 14th

Ensure that garden compost heaps are insulated.

If you haven't turned your compost heap over already, do it now.

Ensure that plastic tunnel walls remain taut to prevent condensation, and increase the ventilation to assist in drying out the atmosphere.

Check heating systems & electrics and maintain as necessary.

 
 

Week 3 - 15th to 21st

Check that all young trees and shrubs are securely tied.

 
 

Week 4 - 22nd to 28th

Check Abies, Acer to see if pot bound, if they are re-pot them into larger containers.
