Miscellaneous tasks in February

At any time this month;

If not already done; move pots/containers to a sheltered position for protection.

Raise pots on feet to ensure water drains away once the wet, frozen compost thaws out.

Take great care in the snow, ice can build up on paths and steps, so be careful not to slip.

In the interest of safety; sweep snow away from access paths as soon as possible.It will freeze solid if people keep walking on it.

Sprinkle salt and grit on paths to speed up melting and give a better grip underfoot.Be careful where you apply it as salty water can damage lawns and plants.

Knock snow from fruit cage netting. If possible, remove netting until the weather improves to stop it being damaged.

Snow will soon melt from greenhouse roofs, its weight shouldn't be a problem provided the structure is sound.

If in doubt, brush away from the outside, and do not go inside until the snow has cleared, in case the glass breaks under the weight and falls on you.

Fill up seed feeders regularly, hang up fat balls and spread other food on cleared areas of patio.

Check over fence posts & panels.

Similarly check timber outbuildings and repair/treat as necessary

At any time this month; check plant labels for fading, damage or loss and replace as necessary.

Prepare for a new lawn.

Check over lawn mower if not already done.

When weather conditions allow,tidy pond margins.
