Under glass in October

At any time this month;

Generally this month is about tidying up before winter sets in; e.g.

Clean out greenhouse and cold frames.

Check over greenhouse for broken glass and replace as necessary.

Clean glazing inside and out to let in more light.

Line greenhouse with bubble plastic.

Check heaters.

As temperatures fall, demand for water decreases, so avoid leaving containers in trays of water.

Insulate coldframes for winter.

Keep an eye on greenhouse ventilation, close the vents mid to late afternoon to retain any heat that has built up during the day.

The use of automatic vent openers will make this task much simpler.

Collect cactus seed.

Reduce the amount of water given to Chlorophytum.

Sow some salad leaves in pots.

Repot Azaleas if required.

Move houseplants nearer to a light source.

Clean & store Gladioli corms.
