Fruit Garden in May

Week 18 - 30th to 5th

Continue picking rhubarb.

Stop laterals on Grape vines.

Keep a look out for new Plum trees drying out.

Hang pheromone traps in trees to catch plum and codling moth.

Prune Peach trees.

Feed Gooseberries.

 
 

Week 19 - 6th to 12th

Deter infestations of gooseberry sawfly.

 
 

Week 20 - 13th to 19th

Prune new shoots of espalier & fan trained fruit that are growing away, from their supports.

Weed around peach trees, apply a general fertiliser then place a mulch material aroundthe base of the trees.

During prolonged dry weather, water the ground around Apple and Pear trees, then water,and mulch the beds around the base of the trees with well-rotted manure, garden compost or bark to conserve moisture during hot weather.

Water Raspberries during dry weather and if not done previously; cut down raspberry suckers growing between the rows.

 
 

Week 21 - 20th to 26th

Prune Cherries  &  Plums.

 
 

Week 22 - 27th to 2nd

Ensure Blackberries don't dry out.

Stop young Fig bearing growths.

Pollinate Peaches with a soft paint brush.

Control weeds around Pear trees with shallow hoeing, then mulch with well-rotted manure, garden compost or bark to conserve moisture during hot weather.

Ensure regular water supplies to acid Cherries.

Thin out Plum crop.

Control annual weeds between Raspberry rows and thin out new growth.

Spray Strawberry plants with a systemic fungicide.
