Can you tell me why my runner beans failed this summer, there were plenty of flowers but not many beans?
This is quite a common problem, and is due to the flowers not setting.
Red-flowered runner beans seem to be the most affected, so it might be worth trying pink, white, or bi-coloured varieties next year.
Make sure that the soil does not dry out, particularly when the first green flowers appear.
Apply thick mulches of compost or other organic matter around the plants to help conserve soil moisture.
Spraying the flowers with water may also help to solve the problem.
