Many of my flowers such as Roses, Sweet Peas and Poppies were full of little black beetles this year, what are they and how can I prevent this happening again?
The insects will have been pollen beetles, that may have been disturbed from the harvesting of oil seed rape nearby.
As the name suggests, they feed on pollen, and normally they don't cause any real damage.
Control is not easy, as any spraying could harm useful pollinating insects.
If you are requiring cut flowers and don't want the beetles to enter your house, place the cut stems in a darkened room or garage with just one light source or window, for a few hours.
You will find most of the beetles will leave the flowers and seek the light.
